TRAINING METHODOLOGY
Zelda’s Dog Academy first and foremost believes in training dogs in a positive manner regardless if the dog is enrolled for obedience training or behavior modification. We strictly use positive training methods to encourage desired behaviors. We reward dogs for correct behaviors with a motivator of their choice (treat, toy, praise/affection). Motivators are eventually weaned out in the training process so as to not create reliance to them. Inappropriate behaviors are either ignored, interrupted, redirected, or taught an alternate response or behavior. The most common method utilized for inappropriate behavior is to mark the inappropriate behavior (“NO”, “eh-eh”, “shhh”) and immediately redirect to an appropriate and desirable behavior.
Zelda’s Dog Academy does NOT use or recommend aversive methods, including but not limited to, shock collars, bark collars, pinch collar, choke chains, leash corrections, verbal abuse and physical punishment.
Zelda’s Dog Academy does utilize humane training equipment, including but not limited to, front-clip harnesses, head halters, martingale collars, standard collars, standard 4-ft and 6-ft leashes, 15-ft - 50-ft longlines, and basket muzzles (when deemed necessary).
Positive Reinforcement Dog Training is not only more humane than Aversive Dog Training, it has also been scientifically proven to be more effective. Positive Reinforcement Dog Training creates a strong relationship with your dog that is built on a foundation of friendship and trust. The use of aversive methods in dog training often leads to emotional fallout (fear reactivity and aggression being most common) and ultimately creates a dog that may listen, but out of fear and distrust.
Our goal when training your dog or coaching you to train your dog is to create the relationship that YOU want with your dog. Every handler and dog relationship is unique and should be treated as such. We will always do our best to recommend training strategies that will be not only be effective, but will also require minimal change to your lifestyle. If we don’t think your training goal(s) is realistic, we guarantee to always be direct and let you know what an attainable goal might be for you and your dog.
It is always important to understand that dog training is a life-long commitment. Zelda’s Dog Academy will always do our best to provide you with all the tools and skills necessary to maintain your dog’s training even after completion of our training programs. However, if you ever need further assistance or support throughout your dog’s life we will always be happy to help.
