GROUP CLASSES
GROUP CLASS INFORMATION:
Payment for a Group Class is non-refundable within seven (7) days of the class start date. Exceptions may be made at the discretion of the owner of Zelda’s Dog Academy for emergencies or other unforeseen circumstances. If you or your dog is unable to attend a class date because of illness or injury and you notified Zelda’s Dog Academy prior to the class date, we will do our best to accommodate you in a future class of the same topic at no additional cost. However, if you do not attend a class date and fail to provide appropriate notice no accommodations will be made.
If you or your dog is ill, has been exposed to illness, or injured please do NOT come to Group Class!
All dogs attending Group Classes must be up to date on vaccinations and deworming. Proof of vaccinations are required. Please see prerequisites for each Group Class below to confirm required vaccinations.
Not all dogs benefit from Group Classes. Your dog may not be appropriate for Group Classes if they have a bite history with people or animals, bark/growl/snarl/lunge at people or animals, are excessively shy, or very easily overstimulated. Dogs who display behaviors that are incompatible with a Group Class setting will be dismissed from Group Class without a refund. If you have questions about your dog’s eligibility, please contact us prior to enrollment. Depending on your dog’s behavioral concerns, Private Dog Training may be a more appropriate choice than Group Classes.
Please wear appropriate clothing (closed toed shoes and weather appropriate attire is highly recommended).
Please bring with you your dog’s vaccination records, a standard buckle collar or harness with ID tags and a standard 4-ft or 6-ft leash, a treat pouch with 150+ pea-sized soft treats, a favorite toy, and poop bags. Absolutely no retractable leashes, shock collars, pinch collars, or choke chains.

Please note that potential allergens (peanut butter, dog hair/dander, cat hair/dander) is present or potentially present at our facility and we cannot ensure the safety of any individual with a serious allergic response to any of the above. socialization (to people, animals, textures/surfaces, objects, scents, sounds, and environments)
mental enrichment and exercise needs
cooperative care and body handling skills
house training and crate training
nipping and chewing
preventing separation anxiety and preventing resource guarding
understanding dog body language and play behavior
eliminating jumping and encouraging appropriate greeting behaviors.

This is a great opportunity for your puppy to build confidence and skills with play behavior in a safe and structured environment.
Puppy Foundations Group Class is NOT an obedience group class. While some very basic obedience skills will be taught, that is not the focus of this class. If your primary goal is obedience please consider Basic Obedience 1 or Basic Obedience 2 group classes.

The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program is designed to get puppies and their owners off to a fantastic start! The 4 main components of the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program are: Socialization, Training, Activity, and a Responsible owner. The skills included in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program and Test help to prepare a dog to take the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. However, dogs do not have to take the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Program in order to take the CGC test.
The AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Group Class is 6 weeks long. Owners must attend all six classes in order to be eligible to pass the test. We understand that life isn’t perfect and emergencies, illness, or injury might occur. In cases where owners must miss a class they must discuss their absence with the instructor and determine a way to make up the material missed.
Some of the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test items will be observed and scored during the course and others will be administered at the end of the course. For the test items administered at the end of the course, handlers may talk to their dogs throughout the test and use praise and affection. Unlike in the CGC Test, in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Test, the owners may use food as a lure to encourage dogs to sit, down, etc.
There are twenty components to passing the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test:
Shows proof puppy is in the care of a vet
Puppy appears healthy and active for breed
Owner describes exercise plan
Attend all 6 classes
Owner brings bags to class for clean-up
Owner has obtained some form of ID for puppy
Free of aggression toward people
Free of aggression toward other puppies
Tolerates collar, harness, etc. (owner choice)
Owner can hug or hold puppy
Puppy allows owner to take away treat or toy
Allows petting by someone other than the owner
Grooming (owner handles ears, feet)
Walks on leash, follows owner in straight line
Walks by other people
Sit on cue (owner can use food)
Down on cue (owner can use food)
Comes to owner from 5 ft away
Reaction to distractions without fear/aggression
Stays on leash with another person
Dogs that pass all 20 items of the AKC S.T.A.R Puppy test, including purebreds and mixed breeds, are listed in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy records at the American Kennel Club (AKC). Owners of dogs that pass all 20 items of the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test may order an official AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy certificate from the American Kennel Club (AKC).

Is your dog barking, growling, and/or lunging at other dogs or people out of fear or excitement especially while on-leash? Our Reactive Rover Group Class is designed to help handlers practice diffusing their dog’s reactive behaviors in a supportive and safe environment.
Prior to the first class, please expect to receive a behavioral questionnaire. Your answers to the questionnaire will help the instructor to not only structure the class most effectively, but will also help to ensure the safety of all participants. During the first class session, all dogs will be evaluated by the instructor to determine trigger(s) and threshold(s). After evaluations have been completed, the instructor will dive into discussing and teaching techniques to reduce reactivity and to develop a more appropriate response to your dog’s trigger(s). During the following three classes, you will continue to build on the skills learned in the first class by practicing structured set-ups with your dog’s trigger(s). All set-ups are designed to create successful experiences for each dog/handler team. Over time, the dog/handler teams will work closer and closer to their dog’s trigger while maintaining appropriate responses.
The goal of our Reactive Rover Group Class is to teach your dog how to manage and properly channel their emotions and give them alternative coping mechanisms other than reactivity (barking, growling, lunging, etc.). This class should also help to boost your dog’s confidence and/or promote a more calm disposition in social settings, as well as, provide you with the tools to continue to improve your dog’s reactivity over time.
***PLEASE NOTE THAT OUR REACTIVE ROVER CLASSES TAKE PLACE AT OUR OUTDOOR FIELD AT OUR BOARDING FACILITY, LOCATION INFORMATION PROVIDED IN ENROLLMENT EMAIL***

The CGC program is a two-part program that is designed to: 1) teach responsible dog ownership to owners, and 2) certify dogs that have the training and behaviors needed to be reliable, well-behaved members of their families and communities. This course is also a great way to work on how to fade out rewards for each behavior as we work up to a treat free test. There are ten components to passing the CGC test:
Accepting a friendly stranger: Evaluator approaches and pretends to shake hands with handler (hands 6- 12” apart). Evaluator does not touch dog.
Sitting politely for petting: Evaluator pets dog; dog must show no shyness or resentment.
Appearance and grooming: Evaluator inspects dog, combs or brushes lightly, examines ears and each front foot.
Out for a walk: Handler takes dog for a short walk including right turn, left turn, about turn and stop.
Walking through a crowd: Dog and handler walk close to several people; dog may show causal interest but not jump up.
Sit and down on cue/Staying in place: Handler shows that dog can do both sit and down, then chooses a position, leaves dog and goes to the end of a 20 ft. line, and returns immediately.
Coming when called: With dog still on 20 ft. line from Test 6, handler walks out 10 ft. and calls the dog.
Reaction to another dog: Two handlers and dogs approach, pretend to shake hands (hands 6-12” apart), exchange pleasantries, then move on.
Reaction to distractions: Distractions are presented; dog may not panic or show aggression.
Supervised separation: Handler goes out of sight for 3-min. Dog is held on a 6-ft. leash by an evaluator.
The first class we will go through the test requirements and identify areas for each dog team to focus their training throughout the course. The last class, we will take the test one dog at a time. This course can be repeated as needed if you feel you need more practice on specific test items.
Dogs that pass all 10 items of the CGC test, including purebreds and mixed breeds, are listed in the CGC records at the American Kennel Club (AKC). Owners of dogs that pass all 10 items of the CGC test may order an official CGC certificate from the American Kennel Club (AKC), or if their dog has an AKC, PAL, or AKC Canine Partners number, the dog can be awarded an official title. Titles are listed on the dog’s title record and the suffix “CGC” may be used after the dog’s name.
